QUIET AND ELEGANT

Atmosphere: Original and expensive interior, quiet soft music, pastel colors, carefully selected menu, whispering and (sic!) your space is not disturbed by your neighbors or waiters who gracefully tiptoe next to you.

Occasion: It could be an ideal place for a business meeting to discuss tête‑à‑tête important merges and acquisitions; it is also an excellent choice for a romantic evening. If you are planning your first date with a special lady or ready to sign a special contract for purchasing another bank or an oil field in atmosphere of elegancy and delicacy, the twilight will balance confidentiality and intimacy for such occasions.

BOLSHOY
Grandiose project – new restaurant by famous businessman Arcady Novikov has opened its doors next Bolshoy Theatre. Gastronomic cuisine in Novikov’s interpretation is European classic in elegant setting. The art deco style is harmonized with Ralph Lauren furniture, English drapes, black piano and collection of Imperial porcelain. The emphasis is made on contemporary art; there are famous names among the painters and sculptures such as Dietrich Klinger, Isabel Munoz, Georgy Puzenkov, Antony Tapies. The big hall stands out; it’s done in light gentle colours but has a twilight which creates tranquil and privy atmosphere. Panoramic windows offer a view of Petrovka Street and Bolshoy Theater. Small hall is more suited for informal dinners; it’s more romantic and has deeper colours in the décor. The cuisine represents the variation of exquisite French and traditional Russian. Chef Camel Benamar has joined Bolshoy after years of experience at restaurant Vanil and here Mr. Benamar had a chance fully to show his talent. The appetizer hits are artichokes & champignon Carpaccio with truffle dressing, beef tartar, prepared for you at the table, served with toasts and mixed green salad and crispy langoustines with salad «Tabule» prepared in Moroccan style. For the entrée I highly recommend grilled Canadian lobster with greens and anise butter, beef fillet «Wagyu 4-5» with oxtail sauce and baked potatoes. You have to make the end your dinner with warm cottage cheese soufflé with vanilla ice cream and cherry jam. Most of Mr. Novikov’s restaurants are trendy places where people hang out and party. Bolshoy doesn’t fall into that category and has all the chances to become a classic gastronomic Mecca where people will come back for unique cuisine.

CASTA DIVA
There is a new arrival in the family of Andrey Dellos’s famous gastronomic restaurants – “diva with a pure body and soul” Casta Diva. Once you are in this restaurant-palace you get a strange feeling of being surrounded by pure beauty and charm. Restaurant’s interior is poetic and lyric The design is a recreation of Maria Antoannette’s palace which is covered in flowers, small fountains make pleasant sounds of murmuring water, glass columns reflect the light, walls and ceiling are covered in fresco, marble statues are decorated with exotic plants. Andrey Dellos together with artist painter Alexander Popov were working on this master piece for over two years. Dellos’s fans are happy to welcome a newcomer because Dellos is the only restaurateur in Moscow who knows how to create a gastronomic cuisine in wonderful surroundings. Italian chef Michele Brodgoni offers a perfect menu: home made cooking with elements of creative innovations. Chef proposes to choose a pizza among more than 15 different types, delicious pasta or risotto and a fancy oddity – foie gra tiramisu. All ingredients are shipped from small producers in Italian provinces. Casta Diva cuisine is also special because the menu will be changed depending on a season. In the atmosphere of Italian hospitality and pure luxury, anybody can forget about daily routines, there is only one thing you want to think about in this place and it is rich flavours of the dishes.

BEEFBAR
Businessmen Kirill Gousev continued the trend of posh restaurant chain and opened Beefabr in Moscow. Beefbar restaurants already exist in Monte Carlo, Nice and Barcelona. Interior of Moscow Beefbar is done in calm, pastel colours in minimalistic style which creates an atmosphere of a nice lazy afternoon. Perfect view of a Moscow river is spoiled by a giant Megafon advertisement sign. Hostesses are bitchy and unprofessional. Prices are shocking. But all these could be easily forgotten after a first bite of tender, juicy meat. Beefbar is a meat lovers paradise and everything is here about the meat. Meat is sold by 100gr and in the menu you could see where the meat is from. Geography is rich just as the flavours of the meat: lamb from new Zealand, pork from Japan, beef from Australia, Holland and USA. Meat is prepared in special ovens and served on little iron pans. Its worth trying appetizers as well, such as  bamboo salad with angus roast beef or asparagus cream soup. People who can appreciate a great quality meat will pay the high price for a steak, but its absolutely ridiculous to pay $15 for a spoon of mash potatoes or over $250 for the cheapest wine. Solution is easy, its probably better to take meat as a take out and enjoy it at home.

ADRIATICO
Lyrical and spiritual. “La cucina italiana mi fa impazzire!” Sensual Italian language fills the air. Adriatico restaurant has been pleasing the lovers of exquisite cuisine for many years. Such a quiet and cozy venue attracts people with its ingeniously elegant interior, extensive selection of pasta and seafood, first-class deserts and impeccable reputation. Chef Marciano Palli will do his best to make sure you will come back here. Big servings are pretty pricey but compensating for a 3-course dinner. Next to you could be kissing couples and serious businessmen celebrating their successful deals.

CARRE BLANC
The name of the restaurant came from Malevich’s reproduction “White Square” which is gracefully placed on one of the walls in the restaurant. White Square image is expressed in décor with square porcelain plates and light colors. The interior is done in minimalist style with distinguish French charm. The darker Pyano-bar room is designed in vinous colors with paintings on the walls. You will be offered two menus: “The Higher class” and a variation of more affordable French cuisine. Any dish will amaze you with its incomparable consistency. Bohemian atmosphere goes well with old European chic and aristocratic mannerism. The cuisine deserves an “excellent” grade but French cuisine gourmets may get upset about high prices. That’s why visitors shouldn’t forget that anything is possible in Moscow restaurants such as overpriced cuisine where you feel being ripped off.

CANTINETTA ANTINORI
Three floors of home comfort and genuine spirit of Antinori. An antique mansion in one of the Old Arbat lanes turned into a popular chain of Cantinetta Antinori restaurants. The chain was founded by a family of Italian winemakers and by now Antinori Family has restaurants in Florence, Zurich and Vienna. The one in Moscow is very cozy, home-looking but genteel at the same time: creamy tablecloths, oak ceiling, shelves with home made conservation jars. Photographs and pictures of Italy, artichokes in oil, pasta with vongole – this is the way it should be in any Italian house. Tuscany cuisine and best Antinori wines are Italian classics and could be perfect for a business dinner among reliable partners or a calm family evening with your loved ones.

NKONG
Fusion style in its best manifestation. You could notice in hazy twilight dark-wood furniture, hieroglyphs on cushions, light curtains, soft comfortable couches and floor orange lamps. The restaurant is based on two stories and there are plenty of space for different rooms including VIP-cabinet and a banquet hall. The menu demonstrates a bold blending of several cultures: European, Chinese and Japanese. The restaurant is rather expensive but chef does his job perfectly, ingredients are fresh and there is an innovator’s touch in the sauces and creative dishes “a la fusion”. This is a place to relax while listening to melodic oriental music where your own little world will be unnoticed by others. It is an elegant ambiance of oriental and European mix.  While smoking kalian you could easily forget about everything, even a very important business meeting the next day.

DORIAN GREY
Oscar Wilde’s novel inspired the restaurant founder to build his own quiet wharf on Kadashevskaya naberezhnaya (shore front) across from Kremlin. The small restaurant hall is designed in luminous colors with sea magic theme emphasizing this cozy venue with Italian enchantment. The restaurant is a long liver and the cuisine is still famous for its excellent spaghetti with langoustines. Customers are likely to be constant fans and long livers as well as the restaurant. Serious and busy looking Duma officials stop by for a quick lunch break with their businessmen friends. It is definitely a good place to make new business contacts and to discuss important State deals.

BOUILLABAISSE
Marseilles in its Moscow presentation! Bouillabaisse is a traditional Marseilles dish served in two stages. 1) Various seafood ingredients are cooked for a long time in a special broth with appropriate spices; later the broth is served as a starter. 2) Seafood is offered separately as an entrée with bread and mayonnaise. This complicated dish is a result of special old recipes and many years of experience. It is unbelievably delicious, healthy and sophisticated. When you are in Marseilles you need nothing but bouillabaisse. Part of Marseilles has been transformed into а Moscow reputable restaurant with expensive décor and impressive cuisine. In the design moldings delicately enfold the restaurant’s walls, striped zebrana wood ideally matches black onyx and noble oak. Golden extravagant chandeliers, white curtains, candlelight, aquarium with lobsters and great selection of seafood is gracefully placed on the ice throne. It is a rare idyll of tender lights, soft sofas and a bit of austere aristocratic atmosphere which goes well with famous sea port dish. Bouillabaisse restaurant is an embodiment of a multilevel comfort and luxury, food perfectly complements a romantic dinner or exciting business discussion. Everything is worth trying because fish is very fresh and chef is definitely a master of cooking art. For meat lovers there is a special surprise – old recipe for meat bouillabaisse.

VILLA
A Mediterranean villa in the heart of Moscow. Can this be possible? Well, if you close your eyes, use a little bit of imagination and fantasize about Mediterranean Sea than you can easily find yourself in a luxurious palace named Villa. The art-deco style is implied everywhere: in light furniture and golden ceiling ornament, in strict angular fireplace and graceful piano. Cream-beige colors perfectly match mosaic and red lights create a magic deja-vu effect. Time stops at the Mediterranean villa and dissolves in romantic feeling brought by the twilight and peaceful light music. Unfortunately, the sea cannot be seen out of big show windows. The restaurant is expensive but prices do not always mean that food is delicious and original. Good quality ingredients, interesting combinations, no complains for a chef however cuisine is too monotonous. Many restaurants in Moscow offer similar menu and I was hoping to try something extra special in a special villa.

MOMO
Modern style and Italian Rivera extravaganza. Momo blends styles, colors and cuisine. The main hall is designed in bright orange colors completed with transparent curtains, light leather seating and crystal chandelier. VIP rooms are done in green and dark red colors, the second floor is designed in leopard upholstering and the summer terrace is filled with cane-chairs and wooden furniture. Background romantic Italian music goes well with chilled Cervaro, crab ravioli, sea bass carpacсio and freshly grilled fish. The restaurant tried to change its name but it went back Momo because people who know Momo come back here for quality meal and private atmosphere. It is always cozy and comfortable in magic Mediterranean retreat.

SAFFRON
Lebanese food and hospitality in light high tech design. Saffron can be briefly described as exotic, fashionable, delicious and original. Although overcrowded it is always quiet and snugly. Grey walls, orange cushions, austere and minimalist interior mixes in sweet harmony with Arabic traditions and customs. The most important Lebanese feature in cuisine is well combined spices. Wine-colored saffron is sprinkled on the side of every dish. Parsley and lemon, chopped tomatoes, eggplant make a palette of different mese dishes, famous humas and excellent shashliks will not leave you indifferent to this rich and flavorful cuisine. Sometimes during the evenings attractive belly dancers are pleasing the crowd with short performances filling the air with exotic melodies and warm Middle East breeze.

SIRENA (SIREN)
The very first seafood restaurant in Moscow. Like any other seafood restaurant it has a sea related design: sailing ship statues, aquarium, photographs of the ocean, illuminators and blue tablecloths reflecting the idea of water and fish concept. One of the rooms has a glass floor area filled with water and decorative fishes. Tuneful music, sea treasures regales and carefully selected wine list make this restaurant a perfect place for important business meeting and a romantic evening. GRILLAGE
Bourgeois manners and modern design in one of the most famous antique mansion. Grillage is located in Zamoskvorechye district on Pyatnitskaya Street corner in a residence house of Mr. P. A. Smirnov who served as purveyor to His Imperial Majesty. Both location and history obligate to keep up the plank of standards. Genteel exquisite atmosphere of XIX century is expressed in subdued light, beige and brown colors, many plants and flowers, wooden furniture and grand piano. During evenings instrumental bands take over quiet background music. The menu has a classic touch: a good selection of French, Italian and Russian cuisine. Fresh oysters, vegetable and crab tartar, herring and borsch, many choices of pasta, fresh fish and meat dishes, including shashliks. Quote from Grillage site: “Blending of culinary traditions has contributed in the restaurant’s atmosphere. Flavors of delicate sauces mix with fine cigar odors. Grand piano’s melodies would charm you with every note. This is the luxury of tastes and emotions. We are here to share it with you.”

DA GIACOMO
A clone of Milan and New York restaurants. Da Giacomo is considered Number One in Milan. It is not that easy to get in there because cuisine reputation speaks for itself. Italian Riviera is well expressed in Moscow twin version though missing an attention and appraisal of its foreign brothers. The Mediterranean style is diligently affectionate: big show windows, large mirrors with elegant frames, wrought chandeliers, designer's furniture and Rampini Rada plates, candles, pictures of knives and forks. Home comfort is gracefully combined with aristocratic manners. Tuna tartar is excellent, hot minestrone nicely burns the tongue. It is high-graded cuisine but yet missing its unique zest, kind of a gourmet secret or magic. As far as I know the same chef worked on the menu in Milan and Moscow restaurants but something is definitely missing in Moscow Da Giacomo cuisine.  It’s not appropriate to ask for such high prices just for good food, even if you have a twin brother which is the best somewhere else.

BISTROT
Food festival in Forte Dei Marmi style. Tuscany is not so far away as it seems, fancy resort and famous pizza could become a reality in Moscow. The restaurant is decorated in mostly white colors filling space with sunshine and warm splash of summer delights. In the décor there are wine shelves, comfortable cane-armchairs, photographs of seafood on the walls and light wood decorations. Tuscan sausage could be easily compared with Dolce & Gabbanna catwalk demonstration since it is presented in Bistrot like a supermodel. Pizza is perfect, ideally thin and effectively sauced with cheese. Summer patio and fountain bring to the scene a resort relaxing tone. Do not forget that you have to pay resort prices here but not like in Sochi .

O’MAR
Mediterranean gracefulness, jazz modern and soaring lightness. O’mar combines elegance, romantic ambience, expansive seafood cuisine and sketchy art deco style. The Bolshoy Theater view and white grand piano tunes give you a theater spirit. Antique mirrors and limpid curtains bring restaurant guests closer. Gentle light colors, white couches, salon jazz and blues are incarnation of a genuine paradise. Scallops, “O’mar” salad and prawns flamed with cognac go fantastic with white French, Italian and New World’s wines. The prices are high and not always justified but who cares everybody knows that paradise cannot be cheap.

OBLOMOV
XIX century Imperial Russia. The first floor - Café Pijon is for spoiled “golden children” generation and for people who live relaxing easy life. You have to act according to old times rules in this restaurant: to sip wine by fireplace in a winter and enjoy lazy afternoon drinking tea on a summer terrace. The second floor is convenient for serious business meetings where you have to order black caviar with pancakes. XIX century interior is featured in blue colors, white grand piano and oval ancient mirrors. Oriental Room on the third floor is excellent location for taking a nap on a sofa and smoking kalian.

BELLEZZA
Beauty has a strong power! There’s no language like emotional and melodious Italian. La bellezza translates into beauty by any means. Drapes divide the restaurant space into different rooms. You can hide in VIP-special room or go public in the main hall where a scene is build for shows and entertainment. The idea of beauty is shown in unexpected lightning solutions, contrasts of brown and beige colors, comfortable chairs and soft coaches, furniture decorated with ormolu designs and big names like Vercase and Francesco Molon. The restaurant’s atmosphere contains modern elegancy and fashion for everything Italian. The cuisine is worth a separate discussion and tasting because Lorenzo Strappato prepared gastronomic secrets for people who understand beauty of special cuisine.

OFFICIALY AND GRANDIOSELY

Atmosphere: Aesthetics, aristocratic manners and a bit of snobbism. Accentuated formality and primness are demonstrated in interiors and menus. Magnificent and sophisticated decorations, excellent service and well dressed public.

Occasion: Suitable for a business breakfast/lunch/dinner and a formal date. If you wish to demonstrate good manners in suitable surroundings all you need is “official place”.

THE GARDEN
Restaurant with winter garden, with eclectic menu and silly name. Don’t know who in Moscow decided to combine English and Russian in restaurant titles but it doesn’t look good. For some reason, this restaurant kept English ‘The’ and the world ‘Garden’ comes in Russian. It doesn’t make any sense, so I hope people who founded this restaurant know English/Russian rules of the philology better then me. Celebrity showmen Aleksander Tsekalo and Ivan Urgant once again with rapidly growing restaurant mogul Ginza Project created a pompous palace with Roman columns, gold decorations and crystal chandeliers. The winder garden adds charm and warmth to the place. Famous chef Adrian Ketglas left Doce Uvas and joined this place to express his talent via mixing cuisines and ingredients in every possible way. Tai, Italian and Spanish co-exist just fine on the pages of eclectic menu: salmon in tai sauce with rice, ravioli with black cod, tom yam soup and gazpacho with black cherries and ice cream are delicious. Its ideal place to take important clients to sign important contracts.

PUSHKIN
Magnificent, graceful and excellently stylized as it is a real ancient mansion. To describe Pushkin you have to imagine a long line of luxurious German cars at the entrance and fancy parade of known politicians and respectful businessmen in Brioni suits and their dates covered in diamonds. It would be a classic picture in front of fake XIX century mansion. Bourgeois formal atmosphere goes well with harp sounds. Nicely and properly decorated “Apteka hall” (Drugstore) and antique “Biblioteka” (Library) with telescopes and globes creates the aura of Pushkin times. The restaurant provides separate VIP room, “Pogrebok” (Cellar) and “Entresol” with a balcony on the third floor. First-class exquisite Russian cuisine is slightly influenced by French: tiny rissoles are elegant in size and quickly melt in the mouth. Even such a traditional dish as pelmeny (dumplings) was turned into innovative traditional dish for €12. Among those who love Russian cuisine are numerous foreign delegations and businessmen who appreciate local dumplings. People consider Pushkin to be one of the few restaurants which balances invariability, excellent quality and first class service.

CENTRAL HOUSE OF WRITERS
History and traditions. 1889 Art Nouveau style, aristocratic aura, Soviet invasion and modern reality. Spirit of the Silver Age writers’ era is expressed in many details: rarity furniture, antique Laman tapestry, fireplace with Georgy Pobedonosets’s crest, Venetian mirrors and white columns. Each room in the restaurant has its own unique atmosphere and design. For example the Oak Hall has two levels and light oak furniture. Fantastic cuisine is similar to what Pushkin offers - sophisticated French charm in the best Russian traditions. The founder of the restaurant appreciates Russian-French balance in original recipes. Expensive but delicious, and (sic!) you know what you pay for.

MARIO
An ancient but proven venue for billionaires. You can observe latest Ferrari models guarded by Special Police Force on the parking lot. Impressive elegant interior and simply fabulous open summer terrace. This place has been a long-term shelter for the high society, rich and famous. This is a “native” place for Russian oligarchs and politicians because only they can afford sky high prices. Mario was the first to offer Muscovites 3 golden rules in 1990s: exclusiveness, breathtaking prices and suitable clientele. €60 for an entree course is for those few who appreciate the prestige of the establishment. But everything on the menu is exceptionally delicious and spectacular. Chef’s generous portions will not leave you indifferent to spaghetti with prawns and beef steak with fois gras. Waiters will treat you as one and only Very Important Person and you would like to come back here just to feel like a king again.

PALAZZO DUCALE
Venetian Doge’s palace in Moscow! The restaurant is Mario’s twin brother; they have one mother and the same educational spirit. Handmade chandeliers, paintings with palaces, golden mirrors, mosaic stained-glass windows, gondola statue and starry heaven ceiling. The design might be a little cheesy but there is no other way to show splendor in Moscow. Luxury of Venice is reflected in florid moldings and in linguini with lobster in rich pinkish sauce. Sole with parmesan is excellent rissoto is always perfectly andante. You will definitely get a respectful surrounding here: State Duma representatives and veterans of Russian pop scene. Bodyguards preserve peace and order standing outside by cars with blue lights and special car plates.

SEM’ PYATNITS (SEVEN FRIDAYS)
The Old Moscow spirit is expressed in three story mansion. Ancient ambience is shown in genuine antiquarian chests and drawers, old camera collections, gramophone, harpsichord and Zinger sewing machines. Sad Coco Channel photographs look at visitors with no sign of understanding. Almost every room is decorated with wide and high Russian beds. It is possible to take pictures on them but no napping or sleeping allowed! Old Moscow recipes must be really valuable since cabbage soup (schee) is $16. Expensive Ukrainian hut with real horses, chickens, turkeys and rabbits. The animals reside in a small yard located in the center of the restaurant. The idea of a Ukrainian village attracts Moscow elite with its extensive choices of dumplings, borsch and real Ukrainian lard. The word “shinok” comes from a name of road-side marrows however when heading to the Moscow Shinok don’t forget to take a lot of money with you because this marrow is not that cheap. Ukrainian hospitality, marvelous cuisine and nimble waiters are known for its best qualities. Russian businessmen like eating out here with their foreign partners. GORKI
Soviet party cottage in capitalistic framing. We all know that Communist cream de la crème used to live in Gorki residence area outside of Moscow. It is still highly rated location however the restaurant was named after Gorky Street (now Tverskaya). The restaurant acquired the “Red” party ideology aura but capitalistic luxury outshines all thinkable surviving leftovers of the Soviet era. Heavy velvet curtains, crystal, elegant moldings, heavy columns, intriguing menu and impressive wine list. The lounge area is designed for relaxing but it is hardly possible because dark stone Stalin façade creates an atmosphere of “being worried and scared of something”. But everybody has to come here at least once. It is recommended to try fried chicken cutlet and the taste will guarantee memories of Soviet childhood.

High family values of Spanish mafia. Marbella’s twin restaurant in Moscow presents creative imagination in its best and cuisine perfection splashes all gustatory receptors. The restaurant is famous for classical but authentic Spanish recipes. Blue Elephant could be easily translated into Russian as “The best cuisine of Thailand”. Blue Elephant is a chain restaurant which specializes in royal Thai cuisine and people have been already enjoying spectacular Thai food in Paris and London. The Moscow restaurant has traditional Thai decorations with many golden splendid statuettes covered in green garden. Ancient traditions and modern design created a perfect alliance in exceptional interior: there is a small pond and a wooden bridge in the center, fresh orchids and original utensils with elephant features. The menu contains only royal specialties. Every dish has a special delicious flavor and a different spicy sauce in the best Thai traditions. Opened recently it is already overcrowded with fans of spicy Asian cuisine. The highest caste of Indian cuisine. Bohemian restaurant’s atmosphere transforms in soft carpets, massive chandeliers and glass doors. The interior has exotic flavor and European chic. Indian generosity is mixed with tender glamorousness in traditionally hot Indian dishes which are adapted for Russian people. Raita, cakes with cheese and tikka-chicken remained totally Indian with appropriate spices. Indian chefs do their best and you could feel that spices mildly burning your tongue. Please remember nowhere else in the world Indian cuisine would costs you as much as in Moscow. I think you have to pay that extra money for luxurious decorations and shortage of Indian restaurants in Moscow.

THE MOST
“Most” is back but with different mission and image. The fancy club “Most” was closed a long time ago but its fame and nostalgia for times of fun did not fade in the minds of the Russian elite. New “Most” is written with English prefix “The” which could translate to Russian as “the best”, not meaning just Kuznetsky Most as before. The Most is a real French castle with top class service and new concept of exclusive gastronomy. There is twilight, massive decorations, crystal chandeliers, a lot of gold and beige colors as it supposed to be in Grand Château. The cuisine reaches the heights of a castle making all other dreams disappear. All you need in this place is a bit of chef’s imagination, fresh ingredients and at the end you will remember forever grilled beef with mushrooms. The restaurant is the only one in Moscow demonstrates aristocratic, elegant and splendid atmosphere which goes under your skin and stays there. At this palace you would want to meet a prince (or a princess) and fall in love.

NATURA VIVA
Extravagant wildlife in colonial ecodesign. Natura Viva comprises three floors of adventure, wild animals, original design and fantastic cuisine. This is a small interpretation of the best part of South Africa. Neither giraffes nor rhinoceros are on the menu, however, stuffed exotic animals greet visitors on every step. The second floor is styled in safari-baroque style with massive rattan armchairs, bright cushions and baroque accessories. There are living creatures in the restaurant as well like lazy owls and angry piranhas in aquarium on the third floor. The place is full of giant pieces of furniture and small delicate details: there is a fireplace and candles, antique Indian mirror, African jute carpet on the ceiling and sophisticated crystal chandelier. It feels like you are in the zoo and at the museum at the same time. Seafood recipes are fantastic, salads are fresh and light as if it just got on a table from a garden. Everything in this restaurant is bubbling with contagious pulsing energy of wildlife.

GREEN GRILL ROOM
Russian gastronomic masterpiece. Anatoly Komm is an established restaurateur and innovative chef who always keep creating and amazing fans and public with new restaurant miracles. Green’s interior is moderately simple but it is an embodiment of rigorous luxury and strict modern: there are no extra unnecessary decorations, folding-screens and ancient mirrors, lots of deep green colors and rigid wooden furniture everything is emphasizing the formal atmosphere. Genuine miracles start appearing with the first course: it could be a soup prepared with molecular method or chef’s signature salad. All entree courses are grilled because charcoal grill is the key player in this restaurant. Softest meat, freshest fish and even shellfish are thoroughly fried and served with original sauces which are distinguished innovations of Mr. Komm. Turbot melts in the mouth and fancy piece of steak leaves many pleasant memories. The restaurant deserves recognition, compliments and minimum two stars from Michelin. Expensive cuisine requires expensive wine list. There is no wine offered in Green for less than $300 since there are only the best wines of the world represented in the wine list.

SHOGUN AND SUMOSAN
The freshest and the most delicious sushi in Moscow. Sumosan is famous not only in the Russian capital, same named restaurant has been pleasing fans of Japanese cuisine for years in London. The menu specializes in modern Japanese delicacies and the menu reminds me of fashionable Nobu: black cod, Kobe meat, fried prawns with hot creamy sauce. Spicy tuna rolls, soft shell crab and California rolls have the constant fresh and incredibly appetizing savor. The location of the restaurants could be better since in Radisson Slavyanskaya hotel the restaurant is on public display among boutiques and hotel bar. But Shogun in Balchug Kempinsky hotel has a better view of Moscow River and Kremlin. It also offers private rooms and more formal atmosphere. Establishments of famous restaurateur Volkov are popular among known businessmen and politicians. It is almost a tradition for many fans of Japanese cuisine - serious negotiations and recent news discussions have to go with expansive sushi and rare Japanese plum wine.

UZBEKISTAN AND WHITE SUN OF A DESERT
Luxurious Uzbekistan palace greets you with oriental hospitability. Bright colors, silk and fancy brocade create the atmosphere of oriental magic. Soft couches, belly dances and shashlik odor will make you leave routine fuss aside. Red wine or vodka goes well with live music which is contagious with “fun infection”. It fills the soul with positive attitude and makes you go dance. Soviet hits and ethnic tunes take you away into another world. The two restaurants are neighbors and they share a summer terrace. White Sun of a Desert has the same menu, gorgeous belly dancers and cheerful atmosphere as its twin Uzbekistan but it is decorated differently. The interior idea is borrowed from the Soviet movie with the same name and decorations looks like the film setting. In the summertime peacocks wander around the green terrace. Delicious and superb buffet called “dastarhan” is for only the brave visitors who are not afraid to over eat. It is also a known place for the best shashliks in the city.

GENATSVALI
Small Georgia in the heart of Moscow. There are a lot of wood, long and wide tables, home looking curtains and hanged dried garlic with hot papers in the interior design. The walls are decorated with paintings where Caucasus family characters smile at visitors showing warm hospitality. Passionate Georgian temper appears in rich red wine and in traditional delicacies: home-made suluguni cheese, phali and aromatic harcho. Loud and lively groups of people tell long and wise toasts while celebrating anniversaries and birthdays. There is only positive aura in this place, live music, dancing and large selection of shashlyks. Guests of the restaurant exchange friendly smiles following Georgian custom - those who are under one roof considered as one big family.

Back to the USSR. Retro style perfectly fits the sport bar concept. Stylish and timid interior with TV screens for football fans. This is a private brew-house and as a result there is always fresh Zhigulevskoe beer. The beer goes well with Kamchatka crab and pork shashlik. Live music in the evenings brings you back to old times in 70’s and 80’s. Best Soviet hits after the fifth jug of beer seem to be incredible music masterpieces.

Also you can choose different vegetables and fresh seafood which could be cooked in any style (wok fried, steamed, grilled, etc) with different sauces. MEJANO BANSCO
Vigorous Bulgarian temper nicely mixed with home comfort. Enchanting and smiling quirky waiters dressed in red trousers flash between tables in the Moscow basement ethnic restaurant. Everyone is a friend here, no greeting words required; you are always welcome in the traditional Bulgarian house. There is a simple and unelaborated interior with ceramic utensils, a lot of red colors and hospitality aura. To indicate the origin, the restaurant has a Bulgarian chef, many Bulgarian customers who live in Moscow and other lovers of home made cooking. It is rich but delicious cuisine. Egg plant and pepper “caviar” reminds me of childhood and grilled lamb chops are on the top of my list. Mejano Bansco is enjoyable chat-place: loud and happy groups of friends, endless feast and never ending weekend spirit.
Unfortunately recently at the end of 2007 the building of the restaurant burned down and it is not clear where it will be reopened again. We’ll keep you posted!

EL GAUCHO
Argentinean tavern with aristocratic splendor twist and the touch of high class. El Gaucho is one of the best places in Moscow to eat meat. It could be simply called the best of Argentina - the most selective pieces of beef with the right layers of fat, thickness, proper calories concentration and juice content. El Gaucho restaurants have more or less similar interiors with a lot of wood in decorations, massive but delicate furniture, immense chandeliers and open grill in the center of the hall. There is subdued light, a bit of folk tune and very expensive wine list (ridiculously overpriced and not affordable for most people) in El Gaucho Mayakovka restaurant but always delicious appetizers, entrees and side dishes. In the evenings visitors could enjoy exciting national music and feel comfortably numb inhaling the nicest smell of freshly grilled meat.

PANCHO VILLA
It is back! Pancho Villa all-beloved Mexican restaurant was located for many years on the Old Arbat Street.  It has been closed for two years and now finally refurbished it pleases devoted customers and lovers of spicy extreme. And spicy in every respect, in food and fun time. The bar counter becomes a meeting place after 6 p.m. Girls sit at the bar in saddles and sip margaritas because only shy ones watch Mexican westerns. Everything blends in this restaurant into a Latino festival - tequila shots and Margarita jars disappear one after another, crispy cesadia, nachos and mildly spiced beef burrito have real taste of Mexico. It is a place to have fun all night long because according to rules in this restaurant early sleep is forbidden and “not good for you”. People dance to live band that perfects Latin tunes while brave couples practice rumba and flamenco. Large groups of people celebrate here workweek ending, birthday parties and even weddings. Reservations are essential at least one week before. Pancho Villa is extremely popular!

ROMANTIC AND LOUNGE

Atmosphere: Quiet candle lights, mellow music and soft couches bring harmony to the body and soul. Relaxation comes with perfectly selected menu and excellent wine lists, cocktails and kalian. Everybody loves lounge romantics - bohemian public and elegantly dressed aristocrats.

Occasion: You decided to propose to your significant other or you are going to celebrate a special anniversary. It is also a great place to pass time with your friends in lazy and peaceful tranquility. This sort of venue could fit a business meeting for close friends or acquaintances because the lounge atmosphere takes off pressure from tense discussions. GAVROSH
Democratic place with decent French cuisine. The restaurant is trying to position itself on a market as the wine bar with European menu where guests don’t flash trendy labels and relaxing atmosphere attracts busy Muscovites who appreciate a laid back lifestyle, harmony and serenity. Gavrosh has challenged many fancy places because the menu is superb, here you can snack on fried camembert with berries jelly and wash it down with two different glasses of wine for a great price. Wine list is impressive, its the only place in Moscow which offers such extensive list of wine by glass, great selection of sparkling wine and champagne. Besides camembert, you can try pate, terrine, from the main course entrecôte au poivre and cock cocked in red wine. The interior has a big city flavour such as brick walls, large bar, leather chairs, warm colours and twilight. It’s a great place to have lunch with colleagues or have a glass of wine after work with friends or snuggle with your loved one on a second floor in a cosy corner table.

SHATUSH
A twin restaurant of London based Hakkasan. The word “Shatush” in Russian translation means the most expensive wool of the Tibetan llama, yet the wool is not part of the decorations or ingredient of the dishes. The restaurant features two halls and a summer terrace. The dark blue hall is an exact copy of the brother’s one and the red lounge area is the best relaxation spot in Moscow. Comfortable couches and twilight could help to relex even the most stressed out businessman after difficult working day. Couples smoke kalian, some are snuggling and kissing hidden by the dark haze. Chinese handicraft floor lamps complement the design, though they do not serve their purpose. The menu provides dishes similar to the London restaurant. The cuisine is just as original as oriental design of modern Asian extravaganza!

TVERBUL
New posh place with a diva name attached. Kseniya Sobchak, TV star has joined Ginza Project and a famous Russian chef to open a place for It girls and Rich boys. The owners have it all, famous names, money and connections to turn a restaurant into the famous place. The restaurant house has history and architecture style, its 18th century mansion where classical composer Rimsky Korsakov used to live, its also used to a be a popular Soviet record company ‘Melody’ during USSR times. The new generation of capitalists turned this place into three room luxury apartment where red brick, glass ceilings and antique chandleries create a modern but yet a trendy setting. Interior is minimalistic to some extent, but its still very Moscow, you cold smell glamour in the air. New chef Anatoly Komm has closed almost all his restaurants in Moscow (my favorite used to be Green), now his home is at Tverbul. The chef kept some of his innovations in the menu such as hamburger with fois gra and black truffle, however he also put in the menu a standard dish of all Moscow restaurants like shrimps with ruccola salad. There are a few interesting creations like crab salad with cabbage and artichoke carpaccio with citrus dressing. Georgian variation of ‘satsivi’ dish is made with think sliced turkey breast and thick nutty sauce, meat cutlets with Savoy cabbage leaves are tender and delicious and come swimming in mushroom sauce. Fish, meat and veggies could be cooked on a grill. After a glass of wine this place became cozy, it’s a pleasant spot to chat with girlfriends and smoke hookah. I would probably argue it’s a gastronomic cuisine like Green used to be but it deserves a try.

NOBU
Nobu Matsuhisa! De Niro! World famous fusion-sushi and glamour, lots of glamour. Its not easy to describe the excitement. Nobu is finally in Moscow. Many people besides me were waiting for this moment, the moment when you don’t have to fly to London to go to Nobu. Now you can enjoy fabulous healthy dishes every night in the heart of Moscow. I am sure that Nobu Matsuhisa would of become famous even without De Niro, but Hollywood actor played his part well. He brought that special hollywoodiness into the restaurant project and turned Nobu into fancy, posh place where people relax and feel casual but dress up and put their smiles on. The success of the cuisine is in secret blend of fresh sea food, great quality ingredients, and the spices of Latin America. Lobster salad with lemon dressing and shitake mushrooms is a must try on a menu, beef anticucho is tender and slightly spicy, the queen of the menu is glazed black cod, Mr. Matsuhisa’s speciality. All the dishes are to share, sake is smooth and goes well with every course, bento box with green tea ice cream is a perfect ending to the perfect meal. Nobu keeps the standards and Moscow Nobu is just like any other one in the world - simply wonderful.

TATLER
Posh and Obnoxious. Loud and Vulgar. Not the place to eat. It’s a trend in Moscow to open restaurants together with famous magazines, Moscow already has GQ Bar and Vogue Café for fashionistas, socialites and gossipers. The new Tatler Club became another fashionable place with magazine covers all of the walls, bad service and bad food. Interior is expensive and done with fashion sense in a style ‘a la kitsch’ of big city. Big panoramic windows and decorative moldings are a plus. When I came to Tatler first time I though I would never came back. Slow service, obnoxious manager who didn’t want to help, loud techno music, strong smell of cigarettes everywhere, girls with unbelievably short skirts, I had a feeling that nobody can come up with anything new and interesting in Moscow trendy scene. Its all the same, same stupid sushi rolls, rocket salad with shrimps and chicken Kiev on the menu. I decided to give it another go when my friend told me that the summer terrace has made the place more attractive and service got better as well. Its true, terrace is lovely, cool breeze from the river was nice, white wine was cold, artichokes and fried mushrooms were eatable, waiters were moving quicker. Faces from Russian TV were surrounded by tall skinny girls in mini skirts. It got better but not whole a lot.

MANON
Manon is not Giacomo Puccini’s opera, it’s gourmandise opera by Michel del Burgo! Famous chef with Michelin stars in his pocket creating delicious food proving that he has deserved the stars. Tuna tar tar is soft and tender, creamy sauce is adding extra zest, salad with duck is refreshing and light. Barabulka fish with crispy bread is simple in its origin by has a complex taste of white delicate fish, dark fried bread and black olives tapenade. Hamburger with foie gra is a dream not only for an American. For $130 you get a piece of heaven which melts in your mouth creating a bigger appetite than before. After killing the hunger it is the best time to look around because the place has transformed from Le Duc middle evil castle into room with big windows and stylish décor. Restaurant has lots of sunshine, you could see the sky and skyscrapers of Moscow city. People who come to restaurants to hang out and not to enjoy gourmet meal could still find their place in Manon. Eclectic, art deco, modern and baroque has been mixed with good taste. Its great to relax on a velvet couch on a lazy afternoon with a glass of mohito and in the evening to smoke hookah and listen to dj’s cool spin. But I would come back here not to hang out but to try the rest of the dishes on the menu.

Kalina Bar is apotheosis of Moscow socialite crowd with a view of Moscow center in the interior of urban glamour. Impressive entrance starts with panoramic elevator which takes you to 21st floor. Fantastic view of Arbat night lights inspire and create atmosphere of excitement. Kalina Bar has a great lightning system where twilight effect is implemented properly, it produces romantic ambience. Modern bar with neon lights, light leather chairs, lots of dark wood in decorations, original lamps, all that decor is perfectly integrated into bubbling life of rich and famous. Menu is diverse and offers Russian, Italian and Japanese dishes. Risotto with black truffle is delicious, Japanese rolls have a bit extra creamy spice sauce, which kills the taste of the fish, but juicy steak is soft and rich in flavour and its a definite sign of a great quality meat. Service is excellent but hostess needs to learn to smile and be more friendly otherwise people may think she is arrogant restaurant owner.

The bar is chic and well done. The other rooms are meant for formal receptions and business dinners. A grand white piano, light colors and GQ-magazine reproductions are the elements of vapid and unoriginal design.  Food and grill station in the middle of the restaurant reminds many other restaurants where this trick has been already used. The menu has familiar "Europe" and "Asia" sections which come from other similar restaurants. Rib eye steak is juicy and soft but Sea bass with spicy eggplant will not satisfy a spoiled gourmet. People come here to enjoy cocktails, to chat with friends and exchange latest city rumors. This is a new recognized place for posh crowd and fancy flirting.

CHAPURIN BAR
Right before the opening of Moscow Fashion Week 2008 famous Russian designer Igor Chapurin surprised everybody with another opening! Next door to fancy The Most Igor Chapurin opened boutique-bar which he named after himself. The concept of one in three (boutique shop-bar-club) has showed a new side of talented designer. Chapurin created interior himself – two story space divides in two a clothing store and restaurant/bar place. Special lightning and glass are the key in a design. All furniture is also self-made and labelled as Capurincasa. This place is ideal for fashion trendsetters: plain European cuisine, house music, and atmosphere of glamorness and party.

GALLERY
This is a gallery of images and the meaning could be understood “directly” and “figuratively”. It has been the center of Moscow night life already for three years. Soft beige and brown colors, modern design, casual yet elegant touch in the décor. There is a regular changing of “image” pictures on the walls. The public pays little attention to the interior as the eyes constantly wander from one person to another. A known Russian oligarch modestly sits on the sofa whereas girls in their best tiny dresses try to attract his attention. And beautiful women with obvious silicone lips and breasts easily get plenty of attention from other men. It is a real show off spot # 1. Foreign businessmen eat with open mouths suffering from the pain in their necks because of constant moving around. The food is interesting and sometimes even tasty, “Chilean sea bass in the envelope” is intrigue dish which reminds a marinated Cod in soy sauce. But still people come here not to eat but to look. So show off your best image!

BISCUIT
Eclecticism surrounded by Van Cliff and Arples diamonds. The restaurant is founded in the historical city centre next to shops of expensive clothes and jewels. Such surrounding is necessary for the restaurant designed in Napoleon III style. The interior features abundant red velvet, grayish colors, floor lamps, mirrors and antiquarian Dutch chandeliers. The atmosphere of idleness and luxury attracts capital party lovers and serious businessmen for suitable event or simple hangout. Cuisine represents a light fusion influenced with Chinese flavor and fresh seafood including oysters.

PRICHAL (WHARF)
It is a beloved place for Rublevka residents. The perfection of the country life is in fresh air, river, fancy beach with new pool and outside Moscow landscapes. In the summertime you can swim and sunbathe right next to the restaurant after a refreshing cocktail and a light salad. Prichal is popular among high society. Slim beautiful girlies in tiny bikinis flood the beach all day long during short hot summer. The cuisine as well as the interior is a blend of cultures and styles - Chinese, Japanese and Italian rooms are available in the restaurant. Shashlyk and smoked fish are delicious.

VOGUE CAFÉ
Vogue flies in the air and goes under your skin. Being fashionable and popular this venue is still the top and most desired among the mightiest and richest, the bold and the beautiful. It represents comfort and coolness in one. Famous English designer made sure that interior will have a proper class and chic. And again, cuisine gets little attention as it goes as a supplement to the performance. And performance comes in everything, in how girls walk around the restaurant and in how waiters are flirting with guests.

PAVILION
Fine view and mysteriousness of the Patriarshy ponds. The establishment‘s history is rich and interesting: in Soviet times this building used to serve as skates rental place, later many people tried to open a restaurant. This time it was a successful accomplishment because the restaurant is truly amazing. If you get a table by the window, you can enjoy the spectacular view of Patriarshy ponds and the parkland beyond or you could always hide in a private corner on the second floor. Posh and stylish interior comes in giant needle looking chandeliers, high ceiling, soft sofas and reproductions with models from fancy magazines, though not an original touch but tribute to fashion. The menu offers tagliatteli with mushrooms or fresh Dorado for actually reasonable Moscow prices. Well-arranged wine list with choices of New World wines pleases the wallet and the soul. Bohemia, famous Russian actors and known party animals, they all love the Bulgakovsky district.

ZEBRA SQUARE
French influence once again affects the Russian capital, what is fashionable in France can be popular in Moscow. Paris and Monte-Carlo are finally in one line with Moscow! Cities share the style, chic and Zebra Square restaurant. The Moscow Zebra combines French classics with modern minimalism. The interior designer shows love for zebra coloring. The affection to this animal is expressed in white and black strips which show off in lamps, carpets, green leather furniture, small and big details of the decor. Only zebra meat is not on the menu! The modern Classical French cuisine is influenced with modern tendencies such as light fusion. Extensive range of tartars, simple but original second courses. In the evenings show business stars enjoy wine, give concerts and hang out among rich and famous.

PRADO CAFE
It is another top cool place to meet, to party and to show off! The interior was supposed to be a copy of the Prado museum in Madrid: luxury is represented in each square meter of the restaurant. Giant eagle statues, water falls, gold leaves and columns. To feel comfortable in this fancy venue you have to at least put something on from Prada. The menu has many healthy and light dishes: small appetizers, fresh salads and fish with French-Italian fusion twist. Everybody is smiling while socializing and meeting new friends. The golden children generation, models, famous businessmen and all those who can afford to pay unreasonable amount of money for a small portion of salad.

BON
YES, BRAVO, PHILIPPE STARK! I shall be honest; Phillip Stark is my favorite designer, architect, artist and inspirer. I worship his creativity wherever he touches. At last Mr. Stark has pleased Moscovites with fantastic creation Bon. “IT” place is an ultra fashionable venue and undoubtedly the most original one. The golden Kalashnikov rifles are perfectly fitted in floor lamps, van ward stained-glass windows, skins, skulls. Gigantic melted candles feature the restaurant’s mysteriousness and atmosphere of a medieval castle. The tables are placed in New York layout style. Amazing sofas and armchairs designed with tattoo prints and images of eagle statues on the back of the chairs. There are no the same chair at the table, everything is different and original. As of the mid 2007 Arcady Novikov has joined Bon team and now its Bon2, the improved version of original Bon. Since Mr. Novikov has joined the project, menu adopted similar dished from other Novikov’s restaurants: rib eye steak, ruccola salad with shrimps, tuna tartar. Portions are small, quality is great, and service is excellent. Angus beef with truffles and egg is something worth praising. But my soul is craving something ultra unusual such as the whole interior and design of the restaurant. For example, a dish made out of a turtle scull could be just as revolutionary as the creation of Bon.

The restaurant is located above the most fashionable Moscow casino “Europe” in the heart of the capital, in one of the most historical mansions. Posh and glamour is everywhere - chocolate colors ranging from dark coffee to vanilla, the delicious chocolate interior is completed with fresh flower compositions and strict lines of furniture. At this restaurant glamorous Moscow residents have birthday parties, casino winners celebrate their luck emphasizing fashionable importance of the chocolate establishment. The venue is designed for large banquets and private parties’ purposes. The scene, professional sound and lighting system, dancing halls and cinema are available. Arcady Novikov personally controlled the creative process of designing interior. His work deserves appraisal as deep grey color, white leather armchairs, polished oak tables and red fresh flowers are truly arty debut of the noble restaurateur. French chef succeeded in the original menu which contains all recognized masterpieces of eclecticism. If your employees deserve a first class corporate party take them to Next Door. NEDALNYI VOSTOK
There is no need to go to Far East because Kamchatka is closer than ever - right in the center of Moscow. The restaurant’s chef is an Australian guru of Asian cuisine who adapted spicy food for Russian stomachs in the innovative and European manner. One of the specialties is Kamchatka crab with variety of sauces, black bean or chili. In my opinion, sauces could be a little bit thicker, there is not enough complexity and richness in the adapted version. There are few delicious dishes “must to try” – baked barramundi with special herbs, slightly marinated beets carpacco, amazingly fresh salmon sashimi and tenderly perfect scallops. Check out special rib eye steak, you can never go wrong with meat in this place. Traditional Russian pea soup doesn’t meet Kamchatka concept of the menu but this tasty and rich dish could keep you warm in a winter.
Nedalny Vostok has spacious layout, many different halls including cozy dark lounge with sofas and cocktail tables. The kitchen is taken to the center of the main hall where chefs working in full sight of their clientele, high numerous shelves filled with glass vases and other useless things, a lot of wood, original utensils, especially original sake carafe. Light effects perfectly introduce the blend of yellow, blue and grey colors. It’s a new glamorous venue with a few private rooms for VIPs and twilight corners for lovers.

MOSCAFE
Eclectic chic in a Moscow style. Everything in the interior reminds me of many Moscow contrasts which are shown in luxury and cozy home atmosphere. The city is presented in the design of a large flat with lounge area and a few separate rooms. There are high ceilings, florid silky curtains, showy drapery, exclusive chairs and forged grating. The design in a la Russian multi complex style is also shown in the large plants and a statue of a black cat. Furniture and decorations perfectly coexist next to each other. Menu is also complex just like the interior. Surprisingly black cod and traditional Russian borsh go well together, as well as risotto and smoked sturgeon. French and Italian cuisine with an extensive palette of Russian dishes could save a day on any occasion – birthday party or a business lunch.

Occasion: Drink or dinner with a girlfriend to exchange the latest gossip, long family lunches, casual dinners with friends. If you don’t have certain wishes for a restaurant such a place could be perfect for any occasion like a rendezvous or a business meeting.

FRENDY’S
McDonald’s should be careful, it’s a new player in town! Frendy’s is a café-diner with juicy hamburgers and traditional pancakes. Its still fast food, but a bit more sophisticated and a bit more expansive, however the owner who lived for a while in US, wants to start a chain of restaurants all over Moscow. The first diner is in Bentley hotel on Pokrovka. The menu of sandwiches is extensive, anything from BLT to Club and various type of chicken, barbeque and deep fried chicken comes on a bun with salads. For breakfast you can eat a large portion of pancakes with serape or fruits, bacon or eggs, fried potatoes and toasts. In US there is a joke, they call it ‘heart attack” breakfast, portions are so big that after a meal like that there is no need to eat all day. It’s a nice place to have a quick bite with friends or by yourself, you get what you see and for good money.

CHICAGO PRIME STEAKHOUSE
Starlight Diner opens a place with classic steaks. Trendy interior was created by American firm Jefferson Group Architects from Las Vegas. Warm lightning, natural wood, soft chocolate colors, large furniture, make this art deco design cozy but stylish at the same time. The main star of the menu of course steaks, they come from marble beef prime quality certified with USDA standard. Like in any classic American steakhouse you can try seafood for appetizer. Surf and turf goes well with a glass of wine and martini cocktail. The bar menu is famous for many variations of classic martinis. Great place for a large company or a romantic dinner with your loved one. I think this place will be successful because there is always a shortage of a good steak.

RAGOUT
Tasty, affordable and quick. Ragout is the new city café with nice atmosphere and interesting innovative menu-solutions. At first this place doesn’t let you to fall in love with it because of long heavy tables, sterile design, steel lamps as all of it reminds a bit of the office and a bit of a cold city apartment. However the food makes you change the mind about the interior. I heard a lot about new chef on a block Ilya Shalev, who worked for three star Michelin restaurants in Paris and London’s The Ivy, the founder of Moscow’s ‘Remi’. For Ragout chef came up with extraordinary menu offerings, so different and innovative from boring chicken cutlets, sushi rolls and rocket salad. All the dishes at Ragout are real gastronomic creations. Many restaurants critics have mentioned that risotto with mushrooms is the best in town. Everything is balanced in the dish: spices, the quality, al dente rice, a bit too much parmesan and butter for my taste, but still deliciously rich. Chicken breast in lemon sauce with vegetables and couscous is aromatic and tender. For desert is best to try plum tart with basil ice cream. Great money for the value, its easy to come back here for lunch and dinner or even take away.

CHERDAK
Nice place for dinner with friends. The literal translation of the word cherdak is attic, and this restaurant is the actual attic with low wooden ceilings, small windows and old furniture. Cherdak is located in the building next to Vogue Café above fancy Asian restaurant Mr. Lee, where people come for formal business dinners in evening gowns and ties. Cherdak is ideal place for jeans and a more relaxing dinner with friends. People come here to laid down on a coach in front of red Soviet TV, they cuddle in blankets, make themselves comfortable and order hamburgers. Design of a place is a simple collection of old things from different attics around Russia collected by many generations: broken lamps, heavy wooden chairs, faded rags, and other last century items. Cool perk, you can write on the walls and doors in the toilet. The menu is kind of a collection of various things as well, there are a few dishes from Asian cuisine, given that its next door to Mr. Lee, Moroccan chicken is the must, its tender, properly spiced and comes with generous portion of rice. Veal chicks are served with buckwheat, this dish could easily fill up anybody. For a light snack there are humus and spring rolls. Prices are reasonable and democratic. In the evening DJ spins the music and people start dancing in attic style party.

EL ASADOR
The restaurant presents a rare Spanish cuisine variation “Basque-Navarre” culinary. And the menu doesn’t contain typical jamon and tapas, this cuisine offers a more complicated dishes with unique Spanish flavours. The key difference from other Spanish restaurants in Moscow, El Asador specializes in cider and this place offers homemade drink with various flavours. The other advantage, only here, you can try rare seafood options. Among shrimps and snail Bigaros, there are Persebes shellfish, most expansive and unique mollusc on a planet. For appetizer I suggest to try pinchos, little sandwiches with toppings like jamon, chicken or seafood. Meet is great for entrée, variety is huge, lamb, pork or beef all cooked in special Spanish oven «Horno de Lena». If you are in a mood to try something original, prepare your own meet on special hot plate «La piedra». These dishes are called «Churrasco». Prices are high, like in most places in Moscow. You have to pay up if you want exotic village experience from Basque-Navarre country.

GOODMAN
The restaurant’s motto is “Good steak for good men”. This is classic American steak-house but with retro touch and European chic. The walls are decorated with black-and-white photographs of the last century celebrities, Frank Sinatra's pleasant voice is filling the air with romantic vibes, subdued light and leather couches bring comfort and placidity to the atmosphere. Steaks are not cheap but they worth every ruble! The meat comes from best parts of the best international cows from Australia and New Zealand. Special grill and frying pans complete the perfect picture of a great meat restaurant.

ACADEMIA
Delicious pasta and fine crisp pizza in its best Italian traditions. Italian restaurant is located in the Academy of Arts and it is always overcrowded all day long. Simple European interior and big windows open the view to Kamergersky pereulok (pedestrian lane). Japanese menu is completely unnecessary and odd in the idyll of Italian charm. Most of the people come here to enjoy penne aryabyata, lasagna and risotto with seafood. This place is beloved by many: businessmen from near by offices, beautiful fashionable ladies, local neighbors and students. You could probably call Academia now a chain of restaurants because there are already four places in Moscow. One of the restaurants on Bolshaya Bronnaya Street became a cozy nest for bohemian crowd. The interior is elegant but it has a comfort and casual tone in every detail: soft sofas, large vases, fresh flowers, plasma screen and abstract paintings on the wall. While the restaurant has been expanding business the quality of the pasta sauce has suffered signally. It is hard to make all the money in the world but it is easy to loose constant clients.

CITY GRILL
Signature urban cuisine in a bold city interior. City Grill went through its revival several years ago and up to now it has been pleasing the capital residents and visitors with good quality service and innovative dishes. The menu ingredients are very simple, yet all dishes are original and beautifully served. And what is the most important there are decent prices for fantastic food creations. Poultry consommé is magnificent, wok dishes have Asian twist and spice, pork chop is juicy and tender. Heavy grey walls add urban palette to the picture. The obvious city style is expressed in background lounge music, modern tables’ layout, subdued light and large show windows with yellow bluish light and a window that separates the kitchen from the main room allowing guests to view the art of preparing food.

BOCCONCINO
Simply the best pizza in Moscow. It is always full of regular Italian clients, this means that Italian cuisine is worth of supreme appraisal. Pizza is thin, crisp and moderately juicy; it has a lot of cheese and tomato sauce. Ragout spaghetti though a simple combination of pasta and meat sauce but at the end of the meal all you would want to lick the plate since it is so yummy. Pasta fresca is perfect, and Sole in lemon sauce is an ideal dish for all occasions. I have to say a few words about the interior because food takes away all the attention. There is lots of sunshine in the room which overlooks Strastnoy Boulevard. Non-smoking room is on the back and it is a darker one. Long show window, soft colors in décor, beige comfortable couches and chairs, columns, large lamps hanging over the tables bring graceful but at the same time warm home charm. Friendly waitresses in bright funky shirts always smiling and adding genteel touch to the atmosphere. All you need to fall in love with Bocconcino forever is chilled Gavi di Gavi and pizza margarita.

Quiet and intimate atmosphere is guaranteed. Fresh spaghetti with the freshest tomato sauce is off the charts. Pizza is a bit dry, but meat balls have enough meet and very juicy. VERTINSKY
Asian flavors and history are a very delicate combination when it comes down to famous family’s matters. Stepan Mikhalkov creates a new restaurant to confirm his artistic genes. The restaurant is a family relic and sort of a tribute to a great artist and simply a grandfather, Alexander Vertinsky, who spent many years of immigration in China. The interior reflects home and warm atmosphere, melancholy for the old times with respect for family roots. Big classic hall decorated with pictures of Mr. Vertinsky, views of Shanghai, big chandelier and cozy corner is made especially for couples in love. Cuisine deserves a special tasting. Chinese spices are balanced with European conservative traditions. There is no restaurant like this which could bring together a complicated Russian soul and oriental passion.

PICCOLINO
St. Petersburg holding “Ginza Project” took over the space from restaurant “La Grotta” and turned it into authentic but elegant Italian café “Picollino”. “La Grotta” may be changed its name, but the interior did not have any make over and even the same chef stayed in charge. Italian chef Alessio speaks fluent Russian and has secret recipes from his Italian grandmother. “Picollino”’s concept is very straightforward – good quality food, homemade flavours, reasonable prices. I think the goal has been achieved. For example if you take fettuccini with seafood, pasta is cooked properly, enough sauce and fresh seafood. Simply delicious. Gnocchi are made with special species, Alessio adds to the sauce sugar, cinnamon and parmesan. Minestrone soup is classic but you could tell it was made with home warmth and love. Tiramisu melts in a month, its light and refined. I feel like signing a praise to tiramisu. Besides traditional dishes Alessio makes more sophisticated pieces of culinary such as beef Carpaccio with asparagus and crème and tuna tar tar with ice sauce made from vinegar. Food tasting was off the carts and I think “Picollino” just got one more fan

RYBNY BAZAR
Fresh fish and delicious mussels are part of the concept of minimalist eclecticism of art deco style. The modern expensive fish restaurant yet moderately priced is located in the bohemian center of the capital. The interior strongly features the eclecticism style blended nicely with art-deco: a bit of wood, light colors, warm brown patches of light, fireplace and wine shelves. Turbot, Sole, See bass and Dorado are always fresh here but mussels for example come with the season only. Mussels make a spectacular dish because of original sauces which are exclusive in its complexity of recipes - Roquefort cheese, spices and white wine. They are so delicious that you could easily lick your fingers off in public. Lights curtain sparkles in a glass of wine, oysters are fresh, extensive selection of seafood is impressive. I would recommend coming back here for mussels and oysters. It is well worth a visit.

SIMPLE PLEASURES
There are pleasures for daily life in simple delights. The first floor is designed mainly for people with insomnia problems who like drinking whisky late at night, smoke cigars and watch sport events and fashion TV. Plasma screens, fireplace, bar offering an extensive choice of cocktails and whisky. The second floor provides cozy seating room with fireplace, leather sofas and large windows with old historical street view. It is a perfect place to sip cocktails on a lazy afternoon. The big banquet hall can accommodate as many as an army of guests and provide all necessary facilities for celebrating pretty much any occasions. The change of the restaurant owners slightly affected the cuisine quality, but we all know that it takes time to adjust to new rules and changes. Spring rolls, crab cutlets and Asian soups are still famous among all choices. This restaurant has the name, reputation and image, so I will wait until everything will be back to normal and people forget about management changes and concentrate on the food.

KOLBASSOFF
Kolbasa (sausage) fest for friends and family. The name says it all. If you want sausage, beer, appropriate snacks, salty shrimps and simple yet European and modern interior Kolbassoff is the right place.  If you compare Kolbassoff to regular pubs it is not that simple: dark expansive furniture, leather couches, ancient photos on the walls, three plasma screens. Treats and delights the Kolbassof way is presented in 12 kinds of draft beer, taps are directly on the tables, home made sausage with special recipes and a lot of football.

JU-JU
A family restaurant styled in African safari fashion. Arcady Novikov made his own amulet with a rhinoceros heads, rattan chairs and striped sofas (ju-ju means in one of the translations from African language “amulet”). The restaurant features African heat and comfort. Safari carpets, fireplace, photographs with native people, natural oak floors, racks and a big counter with many different tasty things. The food has home made cooking tone and it is very rich since there are plenty of meat dishes on the menu. Original desserts and 20 % discount for a day time menu!

RED SQUARE
One of the best restaurant-museums for foreign tourists. It is in the very center of Moscow and no other location could ever compare to that. The restaurant is a part of the State Historical Museum residing on the zero kilometer of Russia! This two-hall restaurant have two stories. The Gastronomic Hall preserves old times atmosphere, walls are adorned with ancient menus and Russian folk music attracts visitors to dance. The Exposition Hall expresses XIX century French trend which is featured in salon red color, melodic classical music on the background which completes the idle austere interior. During the evenings folklore bands in national Russian costumes entertain the cheerful public.

BOCHKA
A Russian tavern with a roasting-jack and grilled meat odors. The restaurant shows Middle Ages spirit in massive wooden furniture, open char grill, dark light where tsar armors perfectly feature the idea of knights and swords times. But it is a cozy traditional house with rich Russian cabbage soups, soft tasty shashliks and cold Russian vodka. The venue allows you to entertain yourself the way you wish: play American billiard with friends, invite a foreign partner to dine and treat him with national dishes or just simply enjoy pork shashliks with your family.

DYMOV NO. 1
It is a new project of a sausage producer mogul and a fancy restaurateur. There is nothing but farce in carousel menu - trendy Dymov sausages, local beer, buckwheat, Chilean sea bass and sushi. Who orders sushi in a beer house is a mystery to me. But it is Moscow fashion and I guess it is still a must in every restaurant. Loud music creates an atmosphere of forced entertainment. This is an ordinary pub with wishes to become a chic beer house. In the restaurant on Sofiyskaya naberezhnaya you could buy signature Dymov sausage right at the entrance of the restaurant. It is not glamorous but at least practical.

EXPEDITION
Cuisine for camping with taiga helicopter flights. The restaurant specializes in Russian Northern cuisine with real forest treasures. As part of the décor - real helicopter in the middle of the room and possibility to drink with a polar bear (fake statue decoration). Recipes are borrowed from Far North locals. Frozen chopped meat and smoked venison should go well with vodka or aquavits brewed from wild berries. After a rich and heavy meal you might want to experience a real taiga bath with birch, oak and eucalyptus brooms. After a steamy sauna shock you could dive and relax in the ice pool. Camping and extreme lovers will be pleased with guitar songs and movies about taiga camping trips.

JEAN-JACQUES
Typical French brasserie with cheap wine and limited space. The tables arranged almost on top of each other. Bistro atmosphere is completed with traditional French delicacies like frog paws, croque-monsieur sandwiches and escargots. Wide selection of wine comes from the New World for funny prices. The interior is designed in mostly dark green and deep red colors, the floor is covered with beaten tile and walls are decorated with wine bottles. This is a place beloved by students, non-declamatory expacts and followers of French entourage.

Z CAFÉ
Democratic, modern café trying to be a trendy spot located in the heart of Moscow in a new and most luxurious business/shopping mall “Lotte Plaza”.  If you don’t rent an office in this building and don’t do shopping in Gucci, YSL and Prada boutiques, it still worth to stop at this place for a cup of tea and a desert. Menu is not original and like many restaurants in Moscow it has simple and boring salads and sushi. If you don’t expect to have a gourmet lunch and want a quick bite to eat, than it’s a place for you. The luxury status of the shopping mall forces the café to keep up with  the standards and food is eatable, quality is good, interior is stylish and service is acceptable.

FRENCH CAFE
Not typical French café but it has great food. There is a bohemian touch shown in the design: leather chairs, small wooden tables and black and white photographs on the walls. The interior is rather democratic and simple; there are no signs if worshiping the trends. Cuisine has French and Russian dishes with a fusion influence. Everything is delicious: sorrel soup, salad with warm eel and crispy duck for two. Every dish is cooked to perfection with a right amount of salt, sauce and preparation time. Great place to have a quick business lunch and long conversations with friends.

BEAUTIFUL MOSCOW VIEWS

Atmosphere: All restaurants presenting impressive Moscow sights are usually expensive and posh. Beautiful attires and lovely smiles are necessary. Light glamorous theme, charming public and appreciation of Moscow beauty.

Occasion: Important meetings with visiting business partners or friends (they will love you for showing you the best of Moscow views), secular conversations with friends and first time dates with someone special.

DADDY’S TERRACE
The best view of central Moscow is from Daddy’s Terrace. Restaurant is located in the top floor of chocolate maker building ‘Red October’. The view is impressive, from every angle you can see Kremlin, cathedrals, and many other beautiful  Moscow sceneries. I heard a rumour that alcohol mogul Mark Cauffman was planning to open  here a night club called Progressive Daddy, however for some reason this place turned into a restaurant and I think its not a bad idea at all. This place is perfect for enjoying sunrises and sunsets, Moscow is stunning from the top of Daddy’s Terrace. But enough about the views, the menu was developed together with Anatoly Komm and the mix of Italian and Soviet cuisines has emerged into some kind of eclectic blend. After pizza Margarita you can try herring on a toast or ‘vinegret’ salad with a shot of vodka. A little caution - alcohol here is ridiculously expansive, and service could be improved, waiters slow and rude. This place became popular among various crowds: rich kids from Moscow universities, tourists, managers from office next door and everybody who loves terraces with views. I’d recommend to come here if you are patient and don’t care much about prices and food and want to enjoy the weather and Moscow beauty from the top.

Breathtaking view of magnificent Christ the Savior Cathedral and ultrafashionable hang out. Design is done in moderate Oriental minimalism with high tech tone. Light curtains, chandeliers, large reflection space mirror and soft seating create the aura of harmony and easy life. Multilevel arrangement of tables and symmetrically set furniture is a big plus. Bohemian public enjoys fois gras and tuna rolls. Mediterranean fusion is adored by party bohemia and show business crowd.

CASUAL
Roof tops of the Moscow golden mile. It is Snob's restaurant with different chef, menu and the name itself but with the same interior. Giant lights in the form of pleat cream lamp shades above the tables remind me the same interior detail from Asia de Cuba restaurant in London. The summer terrace opens an amazing view of Christ the Savior Cathedral and rooftops of Moscow expansive mansions. But it is not the interior that draws attention but the new chef, a known Frenchman highly-rated by Michelin. The Provencal accent in the French cuisine influenced by Italian flavors is impressive. But you have to pay for such originality with an astronomic bill. This is the place where the word royal has the meaning of royal cuisine.

SKY BAR
Beautiful city sunsets on Strastnoy Boulevard. Two levels, a lot of windows and best summer urban terrace in Moscow. This is a venue for people who appreciate dynamic city life and who enjoy observing city’s rush and fuss. Tverskya Street gets to crossroads with Strastnoy Boulevard where traffic is always horrible and crowds of people are enormous since it is a meeting point for clubbers and lovers. Seafood European cuisine is quiet fine. Blue tuna steak is not just edible but proven to be a masterpiece, fried asparagus is fresh and moderately crispy. Mahito refreshes in the summer heat, a glass of red French wine could keep you warm in the winter. Orange sunsets fade in dark blue city haze on the background of the Moscow center leaving the city madness alone.

Red bar interior has an exceptional detail in the man's restroom, the glass window overlooking Moscow from the birds’ breath taking view! CITY SPACE
Light dizziness, windows, Moscow, windows, blurry vision of roads, rivers and again windows, windows… City Space is fascinating and terrific. There is no other Moscow bar that has climbed such heights. The Swissotel skyscraper has become a Moscow “celebrity” for great views of Russian capital. The Garden Ring Road mysteriously fades in the capital mist, towers and high buildings shoot through clouds; all seems tiny and unimportant from City Space altitude. It is worth a visit just to experience the feeling of becoming a bird, a cosmonaut and simply a human with wings. Cocktails are expensive but do not impress. Caipirinja is too sour, and mahito is too sweet. Appetizer’s portions are small and not essential. Prices bite and there is no balance between quality, non gourmet servings and sky rocket prices.  Keep in mind that here you pay for the view and to some extension it’s worth it.

Interview with Tino Demontis

Restaurant Palazzo Ducale has many constant clients. This place impersonates prestige, it’s decorated like a museum, and it has a mystery ambience. The founder Tatyana Kurbatskaya managed to unite in one place heartwarming atmosphere and Italian luxury surroundings in the interior of Venetian Palace. But in my opinion the reputation of the restaurant is based on improvisations of a Chef who creates unique dishes in the kitchen and brings friendly warm aura when he meets and greets guests. There is no snobbism or glamourness in his genuine smile and welcome hug.  Everybody loves Tino Demonstis. This famous man cooks at private dinners for Russian elite, and interacts with higher society in Moscow. On another side it’s just a kind man with a big heart and a talent to cook; he loves to create that’s why he calls himself an artist not a chef. Tino is from Sardinia, the island of rich and famous, therefore Italian Mediterranean touch is in all his creations. But as Tino mentioned he tried to include in his menu at least one dish from each Italian region.

-What was your path to today’s job? Do you think a man has to be born with a talent to cook or it’s a difficult long road of learning how to become a professional chef?

(Tino is smiling). I never thought that I would cook professionally. When I was at university I studied humanitarian sciences, I liked sociology and philosophy. After school I went to the army and I served in marines. Once our chef got sick and I was asked to take over the kitchen. I didn’t know how to cook anything may be except how to boil spaghetti. But I was happy to take on board a new task because it was better than cleaning toilets. I called my mother and she gave me many receipts. I didn’t make anything extraordinary but I learned how to grill meat and make pasta sauce. After the army I left for Germany and my first job was to clean dishes at one of the Italian restaurants. Very quickly I realized that I can never wash dishes forever and asked the chef to teach me cooking. I became a chef’s assistance not long after that. But I never went to any cooking classes or school.

- Who would you call your first teacher?

It was Pepino Bermino, my friend with who I worked with in Berlin. We worked together four years and I learned a lot from him.

- Why did you decide to come to Russia?

It was a few changes in my personal life and I was going to leave Germany. This is when my friend Mauricio called me from Moscow. He worked at Mario at that time and needed help in the kitchen. Mauricio asked me if I would come for a while to help him out. I was glad to accept the offer and didn’t plan to stay long in Moscow. But as you can see I’ve been here now for seven years.

- Why did you stay?

(Tino is trying to hide a mysterious smile). I felt in love and got married! Of course I felt in love with Moscow and Russian culture as well. I liked my work at Mario and the experience I had. When a new restaurant was opening up (Palazzo Ducale) I was asked to become a chef.

-There are many good Italian restaurants in Moscow, why Palazzo Ducale is different? It is also almost a twin brother to Mario?

We treat our clients like kings and ready to implement any capricious order. We build our attention around client and sometimes we even use our guest’s receipts. I use only the best and fresh ingredients. Italian cuisine is famous for been simple, home made and fresh. Its true we have the same owner with Mario and we have a few similar dishes. But in Palazzo Ducale we have own “specials” like stewed goat with artichokes – spectacular receipt from my grandmother. My family has a tradition to cook this dish for Christmas. We also have a few dished we named after our guests, for example spaghetti “Mafioso”.

- Please tell more about your innovative creations. What new dishes have you recently put on a menu?

I like experiments and always try new variations and mix of ingredients. Sometimes it turns out to be fantastic and sometimes I have to throw it out into garbage. I visited Georgian restaurant “Genatzvalli” not long ago and I really liked hachapuri. I wanted to make something similar but only in Italian way. So I made very thin dough and put in my new pizza a mix of mozzarella and parmesan cheese and closed it with another layer of dough. I sprinkled more cheese on top and put it in the oven. A few minutes later my pizza exploded into a large ball and I thought that my experiment was a failure. But when some of my staff tried it they thought it was exceptional new pizza, in fact, very different from a traditional one. So in the menu I called it atomic bomb pizza. Zucchini flower is a rare and difficult ingredient to get but when I have it, I serve it with ricotta cheese.  I also have ox tale on the menu. Once I was visiting Adriano (Mario’s chef) in Rome and tried ox tale at his house. Since than I only use this receipt and it’s my favorite dish! I try to mix Italian and Russian cuisines. Last week we were serving pelmeny with white mushrooms.

- Could a chef of different nationality cook authentic Italian cuisine? Do you think a chef has to go practice Italian cooking in Italy in order to understand a culture and the atmosphere?

I have a small Italy right here! I‘ve been very lucky to be working with great people. Andrey and Vasya can cook some dishes better than me! They are dedicated, hardworking, talented employees and I am happy to work with them.

-Do you speak to your colleagues/other chefs in Moscow to exchange ideas?

Yes, all the rime. I am friends with a chef from Semilfredo. I even asked him for one of his receipts and put it on my menu.

- What are your favorite restaurants in Moscow and in Italy?

In Moscow I like Mario, Semilfredo, Cheese. Our competitor Cantineta Antinori is a great place. When I want Russian cuisine I go to Puskhin. In Italy I can recommend El Bolognese in Rome, Doforne in Venice, La Tradizionale in Milan and on Sardinia the best place to eat is at my sister’s house.

- Do you cook at home?

Not often, I work long hours, but on the weekends I could treat my family to something special.

The interview was over and Tino didn’t let me to leave with empty hands. I had ox tale in my doggy bag, selection of deserts and a warm hug - a signature “goodbye” from Tino Demontis who represents Italian hospitality in its best.
